| Although e cigarettes have helped countless amounts of people quit smoking, they have come under attack recently. New York Health Committee Chair Senator Thomas K. Duane, and New Jersey Senator Frank Lautenberg are attempting to ban them. Lautenberg, who has taken over $100,000 from the pharmaceutical companies who market smoking cessation products, is trying to ban a healthier option for smokers who wish to stop.

| American Association of Public Health Physicians, Dr. Joel L. Nitzkin. He has stated his vigorous opposition of Senator Lautenberg’s proposals. He and many other individuals are convinced that it is harmful to public health to ban a product that is by default far less dangerous than its traditional counterpart, and put what amounts to a government seal of approval on the more dangerous product. The article also states that many complain that Senator Lautenberg is not a medical professional.
The Baltimore Sun last year reported that William T. Godschall, executive director of Smokefree Pennsylvania, said he finds the debate about e-cigarettes to be counterproductive. He agreed that clinical trials have not been conducted, but he finds it odd that a government that can’t seem to regulate cigarettes – which are known to cause cancer – is upset over a much less hazardous product. “These e-cigarettes are at least 99.9 percent less deadly than cigarettes,” he said. “Let’s worry about the products that are actually killing people.” The attempts to ban electronic cigs are dashing the hopes of many smokers who are trying to quit. According to a recent article on Online PR News The American Association of Public Health Physicians recently stated that electronic cigs, “could save the lives of 4 million of the 8 million current adult American smokers who will otherwise die of a tobacco-related illness over the next 20 years.” In the article Dr. Michael Siegel, professor at Boston University School of Public Health says, “To take electronic cigarettes off the market is to deny smokers a much safer alternative that is likely saving lives and improving the public health”.
